Classical Labyrinth Windward Cliffs Maui
Where the leeward meets the windward at Nakalele on the north tip of Maui... in a place akin to middle earth, there is a new Classical Labyrinth outlined in white coral on the verdant green grass at Hobbitland. Take Highway 30 north through Lahaina past Kapalua to green mile marker 38. Park near the orange gate. Walk towards the ocean. Voila!

The Cretan or 7 Circuit Labyrinth The Classical Labyrinth is alternately known as the Cretan or 7 Circuit labyrinth. It is associated with the original labyrinth myth of Theseus and the Minotaur and found profusely on Crete. This design also proliferates on the coasts of Norway, Sweden, and Finland; in manuscripts as the Jericho labyrinth; and among certain Native American tribes of the Southwest. The PIMA basket paints the legend of Elder Brother Siuhu, who emerged from the center of the earth leading his people to the surface. They subsequently turned on him and tried to kill him. To escape he moved to the labyrinthine high mountain paths where they became confused and could not follow him. In general the local costume applied to the Classical Labyrinth somehow entails a battle between Good and Evil. Topologically the basket path is the same order as Hobbitland. (Pima Basketry Tray from Sacaton, AZ, Siuku Ki as shown in Joseph Campbell's Historical Atlas of World Mythology:Vol. I)
