Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church Lahaina
The Belgian seminary students of the Order of the Sacred Hearts studying in Paris attended church at Notre-Dame de Victoires, Our Lady of Victory. After ordination and missionary assignment to Maui, it was natural to name their Lahaina edifice Our Lady of Victory or in Hawai’ian Maria Lanakila. Through the doors of this church Blessed Father Damien and Blessed Mother Marianne Cope took the short walk to the harbor to sail to neighboring Moloka’i to minister for a lifetime to the lepers at the Kalaupapa colony. An exact 42-foot replica of the Chartres Labyrinth has been painted on the grounds of Maria Lanakila Catholic Church in Lahaina in the corner of the Sacred Hearts School playground adjacent to the ancient Seaman’s Cemetery. Shaded from the “cruel Lahaina sun” by 2 centuries old trees, the ambiance is perfect for achieving solitude among the bustle of historic Lahaina towne. The teachers at the grade school consider the labyrinth a blessing. Besides being a spiritual tool, a labyrinth walk can also calm and center an otherwise truculent young mind! Be sure to first check in with the school secretary if you would like to walk while school is in session.
