St. John's Keokea Chartres Labyrinth
Located “upcountry” at an elevation of 3000 feet on the side of HaleAkala, the House of the Sun, is the Chartres Labyrinth at St. John’s Church in Keokea. The parish sponsors monthly evening walks around the time of full moon when the majestic glory of the awesome face of the Creator shines in the stars and moonlight of the night sky. This 36-foot diameter labyrinth was the first to be constructed on Maui. The Chartres Labyrinth is the father of idiom. Visually trace the path and consider, for example, that it evokes the following: “So close, but so far away.” The path almost immediately dives deep and brushes and caresses the goal on both sides on the inner ring, and yet the pilgrim has virtually the entire path left to traverse before arriving at the sacred center. “The darkest hour is just before the dawn.” When the pilgrim has been wandering and sojourning for so long and finds himself in the outermost circuit immediately adjacent to the entrance opening where he started, the sailor’s adage from the night watch applies. Just one more zig and one more zag and you’ll be there at the dawn of the center. Don’t faint from weariness. Light follows dark. It is the natural way. The full moon schedule for 2008 is as follows... The Labyrinth Walks begin with a talk at 7:30 PM and are followed by fellowship and refreshments.
